Guidelines For Ritualistic Abuse Investigations:

1. Document all information as it is received.

2. Define the roles of investigators, therapists, teachers, social workers and others who may be involved in the investigation. This should be done at the beginning of the investigation, so each participant knows his role and limitations.

3. Electronically preserve all contacts made by investigators and others involved in the investigation.

4. Establish early contact with prosecutors and utilize their assistance throughout the investigation. Some basic education efforts may be necessary to acquaint prosecutors with ritualistic crime.

5. Maintain strict confidentiality throughout the investigation.

6. Approach teachers, day care workers, or other youth workers as it all children involved in the facility are victims and all staff or faculty are suspects until the scope of the investigation is narrowed.

7. Appoint a liaison officer to work directly with the victim's parents. This person should not be involved as the principal investigator.

8. Assign investigators in teams and have them work together throughout the investigation.

9. Appoint a media liaison officer who is not an investigator on the case.

10. Do not ask leading questions, instead use a narrative form of interview.

11. Do extensive background investigations of all suspects, victims, parents or custodians of victim.

12. Apply for, and execute, search warrants as soon as practical in order to minimize destruction of evidence.

13. At all cost, avoid premature release of information to the news media.

14. Look for organized ritual abuse, not just an isolated situation. There may be a networking effect that will broaden the scope of the investigation to include more victims and more suspects.

15. Be specific to the degree that is possible in verifying what is learned about the abuse. Separate actual accounts from those based on hearsay or illusionary acts.

16. Be prepared to conduct diligent searches for physical evidence. Remember that evidence in ritualistic criminal cases may be secreted in a variety of ways. Body remains may be cremated, body parts may be retained for utilization in ritualistic ceremonies, blood may be stored for later use, and buried bodies observed by victims may be later removed unbeknown to the victim.

17. Spend time debriefing the investigators and helping them keep in touch with their feelings as the investigation progresses. The bizarre nature of the offenses may have an adverse effect on the investigators.

Procedures For Investigating A Ritualistic Crime Scene:

Outside Crime Scene:

1. There may be the appearance of an outer perimeter which is designated by the use of white, red, or black string.

2. Look for symbols painted on trees; note the colors.

3. Look for body paint, smoke bombs, cherry bombs.

4. Look for a 9 foot diameter circle, which may or may not contain a pentagram, and a second circle one foot on the inner edge.

Note: If in a house the circle may be smaller if the ritual room does not lend itself to a traditional 9 foot circle. Also, there may only be one circle.

5. The south end of the star is an observation point. Each point holds symbols. The south point should be main point and pentagram faces the south point. Note, if it faces the NORTH.

6. West point of the circle is area of the alter (usually).

7. If a fire ring is present, dig down three feet and use a bomb screen to collect the earth.

8. Look for a trail leading from the circle towards water. Search for stakes, etc., used to place victims in a spread eagle-position (head towards the water).

9. Look for cages for animals, limbs, lumber, etc. from which animals may have been hung from.

Words of Warning:

1. Do Not enter perimeter unless advised to do so.

2. Do Not enter the circle unless entire perimeter and any vantage points of observation are secure.

3. Look for painted rocks, symmetrically placed rocks, bones, feathers or pennies.

Inside Crime Scene:

Look for similar occurrences as outside except also look for:

1. Check refrigerators for bottles, possibly small vials of what might appear to be blood.

2. Look for hypodermic needles, (these may be used for removing blood from animal/humans).

3. Check freezers for body parts (animal and human).

4. Check under mattresses for occult books etc. and do a thorough check of the inside looking for items specifically but not limited to those listed on the search warrant. If there are any strange items that appear which have not been listed on the search warrant make special notations etc.

5. Since books are part of the search warrant, look for any writings particularly student composition books, essays, poetry, hand made drawings.

Forensic Aspects of Ritual Crime:

1. Any missing body parts (may appear surgical) may be used in additional rituals or ceremonies. If the body is found in a location other than where the offense took place, body parts may be stored at the suspect's home and should be included on any search warrants.

2. The location of any stab wounds or cuts may indicate that this occurred during a ritual and may be in a precise pattern.

3. Any burn marks, tattooing, branding, or painting on body may also indicate a ritual murder.

4. Wax drippings, powders, string (braided in whole circle indicates bad luke) oils or incense found on or near the body may give indications as to the ceremony conducted and may match items located in additional searches.

5. Be sure to look for human or animal feces either consumed or smeared on the body.

6. A stomach content analysis should be done, especially for urine, drugs, wine, feces (animal/human), foreign blood types, human flesh, poisons, which may have been consumed.

7. Any injection marks (feet or arm pits).

Symptoms Characterizing Satanic Ritual Abuse Not Usually Seen In Sexual Abuse Cases

By Catherine Gould, Ph.D. - Clinical Psychology

Catherine Gould is a Child Clinical Psychologist from the Los Angeles area who specializes in child abuse. Dr. Gould has recently prepared a list of symptoms characterizing satanic ritual abuse observed in pre-school children not usually seen in sexual abuse cases. Results dated 5/23/86.

1. Pre-occupation with urine and feces. Use of words for urine and feces that are not used at home (especially "baby" words like "poopoo").

2. Discussion of feces or urine on the face or in the mouth. Constant discussion of urine and feces at the dinner table.

3. Urine or feces strewn or smeared in the bathroom.

4. Inability to toilet train a child because the child is afraid (as opposed to not ready to be toilet trained or in a power struggle with the parent). The child may reveal fears of having to eat the feces if (s)he uses the toilet.

5. Pre-occupation with passing gas. Using mouth to make gas sounds repeatedly, attempting to pass gas purposefully, wild laughter when the child or someone else passes gas. Use of words for passing gas which are not used at home.

6. Aggressive play that has a marked sadistic quality. The child hurts others intentionally, and seem to derive pleasure from doing so. Child destroys toys.

7. Mutilation themes predominate. Child acts out severing, sawing off, twisting or pulling off body parts. Aggressive words include cut, saw, slice, chop. Taking out eyes or removing other parts of the face and head are common themes.

8. Harming animals, or discussion of animals being hurt or killed.

9. Pre-occupation with death. Child "practices" being dead, asks if (s)he will die at age 6 (the Satanic number), asks whether we eat dead people. Questions are distinguishable from normal curiosity about death by their bizarre quality.

10. Fear that there is something foreign inside the child's body, e.g. ants, ice, a bomb.

11. Fear of going to jail, being tied up or caged. References to the police coming after the child.

12. Fear of ghosts and monsters. Child's play frequently involves ghosts and monsters.

13. Fear of "bad people" taking the child away, breaking into the house, killing the child or the parents, burning the house down.

14. Child is clingy and may resist being left with babysitter, especially overnight.

15. Child's level of emotional or behavioral disturbance or developmental delay seems inconsistent with the parents' level of functioning.

16. Pre-occupation with the devil, magic, portions, supernatural powers, crucifixions. Questions about these topics in families who do not believe in or discuss them are significant.

17. Odd songs or chants by the child that are sexual or otherwise bizarre or that have a "you better not tell" themes.

18. Numbers or letters always written backwards (as opposed to a child who sometimes or often reverses numbers or letters). This is the "devil's alphabet."

19. References to drugs, "pills", candy, mushrooms, "bad medicine" or injections that seem peculiar for a preschool age child. References to drug-like or diuretic effects.

20. Constant fatigue, illness, flare-up of allergies. Vomiting.

21. References to people at school who are not school personnel. (This is because other adults join teachers for the abusive activities).

22. References to "my other Daddy", "my other Mommy", or "my other family" (meaning "at school").

23. References to television characters as real people. (This is because perpetrators take on names like "Barney Flintstone" or child's disclosures will be dismissed as television inspired fantasies.

24. References to people in scary costumes, especially monsters, ghosts, devils, dracula.

25. References to sexual activity with other children at school.

26. Discussion of being taken to people's houses or other locations (junkyard, church, hospital, another school) that are not normal school outings for which parents have given permission.

27. References to pictures of films being taken at the school at times other than when school pictures would normally be taken. Peculiar descriptions or references to nudity, sexual acts, unusual costuming, or animal involvement when discussing photography at school.

28. Marks on the child's neck, unusual bruising, especially in patterns.

29. Nightmares or dreams of any of the above.

Case Problems:

1. Investigators disregard original statements regarding rituals and satanism, therefore they only document the sexual abuse.

2. No evidence is found at alleged crime scenes to substantiate statements made by victims.

3. Crime scenes are never found.

4. Crime locations are found but do not fit descriptions given by the victims.

5. Your administrators want proof of these crimes within ten days (time set for all other investigations).

6. The child victims are interviewed together, by parents, by foster parents, or in the presence of parents.

7. The suspects are made aware of the investigation prematurely.

8. The press becomes aware of the details of the investigation.

9. The District Attorney wants the case wrapped up quickly.

10. The District Attorney says to go only on the sexual abuse and ignore the satanic aspects.

11. In light of the above, the victims continually talk about the ritualistic aspects during interviews.

12. The District Attorney says that if the ritualistic statements come out on the stand, he will say the kids were under the influence of drugs and hallucinated that part of the story (what does this do to the child's credibility?)

13. Parents/therapists refuse to allow testimony by the children because of the increased traumas.

14. Only one parent is supportive of proceeding with the investigation.

15. Though homicides are reported, no bodies are found.

16. Though children say they say other children there who were kidnapped, no record of these children can be found with the National Center of Missing/Exploited Children or the F.B.I.

17. No ritualistic/pornographic photographs have turned up.

18. Children are allowed to remain in the home. Investigations later reveal that family member(s) may be involved.

19. Parents begin to feel everyone around them is suspect, including one of the police officers involved in the investigation.

20. The daycare center is well-known and well-respected in the community.

21. Parents take investigation into their own hands and begin to conduct interviews of the children and surveillances of the suspects' homes.

Suggestions For Police Officers:

1. Believe that Satanism, Devil Worship, and Satanic Crime is real and is truly happening in the United States of America.

2. Stop, Look and Listen --- before entering a suspected Satanic or Occult meeting area or crime scene. Many an ill-advised officer has destroyed vital evidence because they did not recognize it as evidence.

3. Please be cautioned on the use of informants in Satanic Investigations. Not only will it take a great deal of time before a new member will be exposed to many of the criminal-related activities, they will also be killed if suspected. (Plus both their tongues and hearts will be removed. This is Satanic Law!)

4. Stay abreast of kidnapping and missing children/teen/adult reports in your working areas. Many may have either been recruited or kidnapped in preparation for future rituals.

5. Be aware of mutilated animal reports being described as surgically mutilated or decapitated.

6. Be on your guard at all times. Satanic group gatherings are known for possessing firearms and sophisticated weaponry. If they are not afraid of sacrificing people --- you can rest assured that they will use everything at their disposal to prevent their exposure.

7. Don't be surprised at who is involved. Many affluent people with high and influential positions are involved. These are the most dangerous. They, as professional people, have the most to lose.
